If you are like me, by the time you are nine months pregnant the last thing you want to do is get dollied up and in front of a camera for a maternity photographer. In our hearts, we understand how special this moment in our life is and we know that we will cherish the images but physically we feel huge and swollen, we likely have cankles, nothing that fits (especially shoes) and dark circles under our eyes. Our hormones have us by the throat and we just want this baby out already! When we are spending money to hire an Orange County maternity photographer, we want to do so when we are at our best and nine months pregnant is not our idea of our best look.
But here’s the thing, maternity photographs are about the belly and the baby that is growing in there. Your bump is SUPPOSED to be big, huge in fact relative to the rest of your body, the bigger the better for purposes of pictures.
When Lauren contacted me about booking photos with an Orange County maternity photographer, she was reluctant. She had taken some when she was pregnant with her first two babies and felt obligated to do them for baby number 3 as well. But she wasn’t feeling at her best, was exhausted by chasing around her two kiddos while dealing with a less than perfect or easy pregnancy and was overwhelmed by the thought of planning a photo shoot.
The biggest hurdle was with what to wear. Lauren didn’t feel like she had anything that would work and didn’t have the time or inclination to go shopping for something just for a single photo session. Well, did you know that I have a client closet with a selection of maternity gowns that my clients may use for their maternity session? She didn’t either until I offered it to her and sent her some pictures of a couple of options that I felt would work well for a casual family maternity photography session. You can find additional information about maternity gowns and the client closet of this Orange County maternity photographer here.
The dress she selected from my client closet worked perfectly and my hat featured in the fall session styling article I wrote made an appearance too. Lauren chose my best kept secret North Orange County location for the photo shoot and we timed it perfectly for some beautiful yummy light. The afternoon was casual and low key and we let the girls play and have fun resulting in some fantastic lifestyle maternity images.
The session was easier than Lauren had anticipated and the images captured during this special time are priceless. She was so glad that she overcame the initial hesitations and documented her pregnancy by using an Orange County maternity photographer. Here are a selection of images from this lifestyle family maternity photo session:
So you overcame the hesitations of getting maternity images done in the first place and now you have pictures of your pregnant self sitting on your hard drive and aren’t really sure what to do with them. I recommend putting them into an album. I personally like to include maternity images along with newborn photos in the same album but you could do separate albums if you wanted. In Lauren’s case, Baby Clayton arrived just a week after we took her maternity photos and so we combined the maternity and newborn images into one album. Here’s a peek at the custom designed maternity spreads in the Krake’s handcrafted album.
